
Biography
Joo Yon Chung is an accomplished flutist and passionate educator based in the Dallas–Fort Worth area. She currently serves as the principal flutist of the New Texas Sinfonia and performs regularly with various regional ensembles. Joo also maintains a thriving private flute studio, where she is dedicated to inspiring and guiding students with personalized encouragement and a focus on cultivating their musical expression and lifelong love of music.
In 2019–2020, she was honored to be appointed as an Associate Member of the Civic Orchestra of Chicago, recognizing her strong musicianship and orchestral potential.
Joo has performed at notable music festivals such as the Round Top Festival Institute, where her chamber group won first prize in the Honors Chamber Group Competition. Their performance of Paul Taffanel’s Wind Quintet in G was nationally broadcast on American Public Media’s Performance Today. She has also appeared at the National Flute Association Conventions, performing with flute ensembles in 2016, 2017, 2023, and 2024.
Her competitive achievements include 3rd place in the National Flute Association’s 2019 Orchestral Audition and Masterclass Competition. She has been featured in masterclasses through organizations such as the Chicago Flute Club, Southeast Michigan Flute Association, and Texas Flute Society.
Joo earned her Bachelor of Music, magna cum laude, from the University of Cincinnati College–Conservatory of Music, studying with Randy Bowman and Bradley Garner. She completed her Master of Music at The University of Texas at Austin under Marianne Gedigian and was the first flutist admitted to the Artist Diploma program at the University of Illinois Urbana–Champaign, studying with Jonathan Keeble.
She continues to grow as an artist through ongoing study and performances, drawing inspiration from leading flutists and educators.
